Jurassic Perth
Take your picture with a T-Rex or a happy snap with a Velociraptor throughout the city this August! Jurassic Perth will let you experience Perth like never before with just your imagination and your smart phone!
The creative minds from Scitech have joined forces with the techno whizzes at iiNet to create Perth’s own virtual Jurassic Park, bringing dinosaurs into the CBD.
Using a specialised smart phone app, the wonders of GPS positioning and computer generated images, visitors will be able to see the unseen and explore a virtual world created for the Perth Winter Arts Festival and National Science Week.
Where:
Murray and Hay Street Malls, Perth CBD
How to get involved:
To get up close and personal with the dinosaurs you need a smartphone (iPhone or Android) or an iPad 2/tablet. Next, visit: http://scitech.iinet.net.au/download
From here:
- Download Layar for either iOS or Android; then
- Download the Jurassic Science Week 'Layer'
- And, go hunting!
How it works:
Once you have fired up the Layer app, it will automatically activate your phone's camera. The phone's GPS (Global Positioning System) will then determine the location of you and your phone, while the compass will figure out which direction your phone is facing. (Cool, huh?)
Once the Jurassic Science Week Layer is launched, the app will load up digital information (our prehistoric friends) when a location coordinate is matched in Layer. The app then combines the digital with the real, offering an 'augmented' view of the world which includes those hidden dinosaurs. (Is that a T-Rex I see before me...?)
Share your prehistoric experience:
You can share your experience from within the Jurassic Science Week Layer (in the app).
Hit the 'action' button to:
- Take a screenshot
- Email
- Share with Facebook or Twitter

Having problems finding those dinosaurs?
Well, if you'd been extinct for over 65 million years, you'd probably be a little shy too, but these are experimental dinosaurs after all, so there are a few things to bear in mind when hunting them down:
- Poor network reception or signal strength (which can also be affected by weather and tall buildings) may mean your dinosaur takes a while to reveal itself.
- If you get no results when you first load the Jurassic Science Week app, it's probably just a delay with the satellite signal, so just try refreshing a few minutes later.
- Make sure you're not more than five metres away from the dinosaur location marked by the footprint on the path as most mobile GPS work between one and five metres.
