Victoria

Now in its 13th year, National Science Week enables those with a general interest in science and teachers, organisations and students, to both host and attend a range of entertaining events and activities about science, technology and engineering. Why not showcase the science at your organisation? Invite a scientist to your place and see what you can learn from each other. Or else just sit-back and enjoy some novel and engaging science.

 City Science

After the success of last years City Science events, this year should be even bigger and better. Look forward to events across the first weekend of National Science week, Friday to Sunday, including events at Melbourne Museum and the Queen Victoria Market.

Join us at QV square for the Market of the Mind on Friday 13th August 5:30-9:00PM. Be chased by brain hungry zombies, see if brain-games make you smarter and hear the latest on brain research. An event for 18+

Spend a Day at Melbourne Museum on Saturday 14th August. Take an intriguing look at the Titianic’s graveyard, explore the collections of the museum and discover the amazing world of Australian Biodiversity. An event for one and all.

On Sunday 15th August 9:30AM-3:30PM Living Science at the Queen Victoria Market is an event the whole family will enjoy. Find out the secret science behind sweet-making, see the Cheese-Man and hear about his favourite snack and explore the relationships between food, science and the environment. An event for the whole family.

This event is supported by the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, the Victorian Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional Development and the City of Melbourne.

Moomba WaterFest 2010 and the Birdman Rally

This year we plan to launch a competition for the “most likely to fly” entrant in Moomba’s Birdman rally. Competition winners will be announced during SWk and the prize will include support for the development of the winning design for 2011. You could Google “How Bees Fly” to find some interesting new ideas for designs . . .

Science Week Mini-Zine Competition

In 2009 the Mini-Zines were a popular part of many SWk events in Victoria.

In 2010, you can participate in the Science Mini-Zine Competition.

Create a science mini-zine which tells a science story. Your story might be weird, wonderful or just plain gross, but it should be something zine readers will find interesting.

In 2010 the mini-zine competition has 3 categories:

Primary – primary school students only

Secondary – secondary school students only

Open – open to one and all.

Zine templates can be downloaded here: http://www.andrewyang.com/zines/ZineTemplate.pdf

And zine folding instructions can be found here: http://www.andrewyang.com/how2fold.pdf

Competition closes 31st July 2010

For more information visit the science mini-zine competition page.

INVITE A SCIENTIST TO DINNER!

Forty farmers in Foster, through their local Landcare consultant, invited some soil scientists down from the University of Melbourne to talk carbon sequestration. By all accounts, it was a very valuable evening, with knowledge shared and ideas challenged, over a quiet dinner in the lounge of the local pub. Don’t wait until SWk to do this – if you have a community group grappling with an issue, a health support group wanting to understand how research is progressing, or share a passion for some of the flora and/or fauna in your region – contact Carly for details about how to submit an expression of interest to host a dinner and we’ll assist you with funds and people to make it happen.  Who knows, you might be like the small community of Tallygaroopna who invited an astronomer for lunch and visiting NASA astronaut Megan McArthur turned up with tales and film of her Hubble mission.

Victoria's Energising Science and Mathematics Education Strategy & Science Week 2010

$90 million dollars is being invested to help Victoria’s students become the next generation of innovators and scientists. Victoria’s Energising Science and Mathematics Education Strategy aims to ensure every student develops the skills and knowledge they need for 21st century life and work.
Energising Science and Mathematics Education’s http://www.education.vic.gov.au/about/directions/mathsciencestrategy.htm initiatives include:
·       Construction of  three new state-of-the-art specialist science centres located at Ballarat, Geelong and Heidelberg to complement the existing three science centres specialising in space, gene technology and environmental science;
·       Additional ICT infrastructure to expand the specialist science centre network to include the new federally-funded school science laboratories;
·       Increased access to the specialist science centres by students from disadvantaged schools;
·       Employment of 200 specialist mathematics and science teaching and learning coaches;
·       Extensive teacher professional learning that includes region-based programs and a prestigious summer school for high-performing teachers of mathematics and science;
·       Training and employment of high-performing science and mathematics graduates through Teach for Australia;
·       Scholarships to attract new science and mathematics teachers through the Mathematics and Science Graduate Scholarship initiative and Career Change program;
·       Science and mathematics awards and scholarships recognising best practice schools.
·       Partnerships that connect schools with business and industry;
·       University student mentoring programs for primary and secondary school students across Victoria;
·       Publication of contemporary teaching and learning resources and outreach programs;

SWk will provide an opportunity to announce the recipients of the Science and Mathematics awards and to showcase the fantastic work underway in science and mathematics education in Victoria.

Event Holders Function

 National Science week boasts hundreds of events in Victoria and across Australia. These are coordinated by private organisations, government agencies, schools and individuals. A successful event managers’ meeting was held on 30 March 2010. The meeting provided advice and a networking opportunity. It was great to see so many people planning to run National Science Week events in Victoria.

 If you’re interested in running a National Science Week event contact Carly or call on (03) 9252 6472.
