National Science Week in the ACT is a celebration and showcase of scientific achievements and endeavours in the region.
With so much to discover in the nation's capital, getting on board with National Science Week is a must for everyone!
Grab your copy of the Canberra region National Science Week program at www.csiro.au/NSWk-program or zoom in on the ACT in the events map to see what is happening near you!
Our nation's capital is home to some amazing events this Science Week.
Highlights include:
The Sounds of Science - Charles Darwin played the piano to earthworms to study the effects of sound and vibration on them. Einstein played the violin. There is a long tradition of scientists being involved in art and artists using science in their craft. The Sounds of Science is an original musical/theatrical performance written and performed by Shortis and Simpson who tease out the symphony hiding away in the sciences, and in the process make the subject accessible, informative, and highly entertaining.
Nanotechnology in your Shopping Trolley - Dr Paul Willis from ABC’s Catalyst leads a panel of specialists in a discussion about nanotechnology - with bar open and election updates!
Intellectual Self Defence - This light hearted show draws heavily on the tradition of 1970’s kung fu movies to follow the adventures of Johnny Brainfist as he tackles ideas such as scientific method, evolution, climate change and alternative medicine. Presented by Alison McGregor.
Silent Plankton - a 3D Exploration of Microscopic Life in the Oceans - Prof Kerry Swanson, University of Canterbury (NZ) is an expert when it comes to the Southern Oceans and their fauna and flora, particularly micro-fauna. Prof Swanson take the audience on a journey to the sea-floor as the skeletons of surface dwelling organisms slowly sink, a phenomenon called ‘marine snow’.
The Science of Dance - Dr Gordon Waddington uses a high speed video and ultrasound to show participants both the macro and micro view of the dynamic function of muscles and joints in performing dance and athletic activity. The impact of forces and accelerations on the body are displayed on screen in real time using volunteers to show basic biomechanics of performance and how injury may occur and be prevented.
SCINEMA Festival of Science Film is coming to the Capital - visit SCINEMA for more information. With 2010 being the International Year of Biodiversity, expect a program exploring the way we interact with the environment and the critters we share it with.
Canberra Family Science Spectacular - 3 days of hands-on science fun at CSIRO Discovery Fri 20, Sat 21 & Sun 22 August.
