Victoria
Now in its 15th year, National Science Week enables those with a general interest in science and teachers, organisations and students, to both host and attend a range of entertaining events and activities about science, technology and engineering. Why not showcase the science at your organisation? Invite a scientist to your place and see what you can learn from each other. Or else just sit-back and enjoy some novel and engaging science.
National Science Week will be held from 11 - 19 August in 2012.
This year's school theme is "Energy Evolution" in line with the International Year of Sustainable Energy for All".

Wed 10 Aug - SCINEMA Sandwich - short science films played in our marquee at QV square - did you stop by at lunchtime to watch?
Thurs 11 Aug - Birdman Sandwich - National Science Week teamed up with the Moomba Birdman Rally to bring you the science behind a Birdmans' craft falling in the Yarra river (sorry, FLYING over the Yarra river !)
Fri 12 Aug - Market of the Mind. Science and socialising combined to create an event you won't forget in a hurry. With pink brains in jars, themed cocktails and live music from Great Big Science Gig our QV square marquee was buzzing. Did you see the brain drawing? Check out re-science for more images.
Sun 14 Aug - Living Science at the Queen Victoria Market Shoppers at the Queen Victoria Market explored the relationships between science, food, innovation, technology and the environment. Tubby the Robot and his mechanical fish came along for some fun! Our special international guest Jeff Potter, author of 'Cooking for Geeks' mixed food and science together, creating some instant icecream.
Throughout the day there were interactive presentations, hands-on activities, shows and sweet science demonstrations.
City Science event is supported by the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, the Victorian Department of Business and Innovation, the City of Melbourne, and RMIT University.

We have a life-size cut-out of Marie Curie available for schools and community groups to borrow. Marie Curie makes a great photo opportunity for everyone. Check out the photos of Marie Curie with the chemists at the Women Sharing a Chemical Moment in Time breakfast. We've also got a Charles Darwin just waiting to pose with you too!

Invite a Scientist to Dinner!
Forty farmers in Foster, through their local Landcare consultant, invited some soil scientists down from the University of Melbourne to talk carbon sequestration. By all accounts, it was a very valuable evening, with knowledge shared and ideas challenged, over a quiet dinner in the lounge of the local pub.
Don't wait until National Science Week to do this. If you have a community group grappling with an issue, a health support group wanting to understand how research is progressing, or share a passion for some of the flora and/or fauna in your region then contact Carly for details about how to submit an expression of interest to host a dinner and we'll assist you with funds and people to make it happen.
Who knows, you might be like the small community of Tallygaroopna who invited an astronomer for lunch and visiting NASA astronaut Dr Megan McArthur turned up with tales and film of her Hubble mission!
