National Science Week is a great opportunity for school groups to learn and participate in some stimulating science activities, as well as having some fun and excitement with their families and communities. In the past schools have held science expos and astronomy nights, completed intriguing hands-on experiments, gone on excursions to laboratories and field locations, made science videos, hosted ‘Brain breaks’ quizzes, held video conferences with researchers, and participated in art of science activities. Our events map is already showing lots of blue pins highlighting schools events that are planned for 2010!
Grants for National Science Week activities are provided to schools by the Australian government through ASTA and your local Science Teachers Association. These grants are made available to all Australian schools to enable them to conduct science activities/events during National Science Week 14-22 August 2010.
In 2010, there has been a change to the way the school grants have been offered. Schools were able to apply for two types of grants -
1. A seed grant of $1000 or
2. A school grant of up to $500.
Applications for grants have closed and the successful recipients have been announced. Congratulations to all who have received a grant - please visit the ASTA web site for a full listing of 2010 recipients.
We look forward to some exciting schools events all around the country in National Science Week 2010 and hope you will register them on our map. We would also love to see your photos and stories of what science is happening in your school community! Here is an example of an activity Healesville High School held last year – an enormous outline of an ‘emu in the sky’ image which was used in NSWk 2009 posters!
| 2010 has been designated by the United Nations as the International Year of Biodiversity, so the NSWk schools theme for 2010 is Australian Biodiversity. |
